About Raymond
Raymond has been acting for over 60 years, but not all of it on the stage! He made his formal acting debut with a 5-minute appearance in Agatha Christie’s ‘Witness for the Prosecution’ in 2008, and over the next few years appeared in ‘Hotel Paradiso’, ‘Pride and Prejudice’, and ‘August Osage County’ at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg.
In 2009 he was assistant-director & stage-manager of the Muizenberg Dramatic Society (“MADS”) production of Athol Fugard’s ‘Hello and Goodbye’ at the Masque Theatre and again later that year at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.
In September 2009, he made his singing & dancing debut in the chorus of the Cape Town G&S Society’s production of ‘HMS Pinafore – the Musical’ at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town, for which he received the Vincent Costello Trophy for the person who “best exhibited the spirit of Gilbert and Sullivan during the run of the production”. (Not surprisingly he received no awards for singing and dancing!).
In 2012 he adapted for the stage, directed & played a cameo role in MADS’ production of John Hughes’ iconic 1985 Hollywood movie ‘The Breakfast Club’.
For this, he received a Certificate of Excellence for ‘Creative Staging’ from CATA (Cape Amateur Theatre Awards) in March 2013. Lead actor, Dean Howarth, won the coveted CATA Award for Best Male Actor, and Samantha Jane Tunnah received a Certificate of Excellence for ‘Most Promising Female Newcomer’.
At MADS’ 2012 awards evening, The Breakfast Club won the awards for Best Production, Best Director and Best Set. The show was included in the Cape Times list of Top 5 Amateur Dramatic Plays of 2012.
At the National Arts Festival, Grahamstown, in 2011, Raymond’s production company, ‘on the shoulders of GIANTS’, produced – and he adapted & performed in- a two-handed comedy, ‘Romantic Fools’, by the USA writer, Rich Orloff. In subsequent years, at the same venue, he adapted, produced & performed two one-person, comedy-dramas by the UK writer, Ron Aldridge, both premiere performances in South Africa – ‘My Dog’s Got No Nose’ (in 2013) and ‘Hovering’ (in 2014). They have subsequently been presented at theatres in Muizenberg, Somerset West and Pinelands, both individually & together. In October 2016, ‘Hovering‘ was selected for inclusion in the Cape Town Fringe Festival.
